So I excused myself and came back ten minutes later with some food and drink. I sat down on the sidewalk next to her and we started to share the food.

There is something about eating together that quickly breaks down barriers like nothing else, and little by little she started to open up and talk with me.

She told me her name was Vanessa. She was 18 years old and had been on the streets for 5 weeks after leaving a violent and abusive husband.

I noticed that all the time we spoke, that she kept her hand over her mouth and after a few minutes, I asked her why.

It was then that the tears started.

She made no noise.

No sobbing.

Just a steady flow of huge tears that slowly rolled down her face as her heart-breaking story tumbled out.

"Last night, I was sleeping on the street with my baby and a guy dragged me behind a car and raped me. Then, when he was through, he laughed and knocked out my two front teeth."
